Elements of the tiara were first made in 1767 and passed down through generations of the Spencer Family. In 1919 Princess Diana’s grandmother Lady Cynthia Hamilton received it as a wedding present when she married “Jack”, Viscount Althorp, the future 7th Earl Spencer. In the 1930’s Cynthia had Garrard’s arrange the tiara into the current version we see today. The tiara has a garland style design with a central heart shaped motif, flanked by running scrolls, interspersed with stars and flowers.    The tiara has been used as a wedding tiara in the family: Lady Jane in 1978, Lady Sarah in 1980, Princess Diana in 1981, Victoria Lockwood in 1989, and most recently Lady Sarah’s daughter Celia in 2018. Diana wore the tiara often during her marriage as an alternative to the heavier Lover’s Knot Tiara. Today the tiara belongs to her brother Charles, 9th Earl Spencer.
